The Rolf Prince Scholarship

In loving memory of Professor Rudolf Prince AO (2 August 1928 – 3 July 2017). For more than five decades Professor Prince had been a leader, colleague and friend of the Faculty of Engineering and IT.

Emeritus Professor Rudolf (Rolf) George Herman Prince was an international leader in chemical engineering whose 65 years of dedication to engineering education inspired thousands of students to achieve professional excellence.

Professor Prince began his academic career at the University of Sydney under Professor Hunter in 1949. In 1965, he left to establish the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Queensland. In 1969, Professor Prince returned to Sydney as Head of Department – a post he held until 1994. Professor Prince remained an active contributor throughout his life.

An international expert in distillation, Professor Prince was the first Australian President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. Many years ahead of his peers, Professor Prince championed the role of women in engineering, and during his decades of academic excellence, Professor Prince developed ongoing industrial partnerships to bring students and industry together. The Major Industrial Project Placement Scholarship (MIPPS) program he pioneered put students into industry and brought University skills to the solution of real industrial problems.

His service to the profession and community were recognised with the highest awards such as the Peter Nicol Russell Memorial Medal, the Chemeca Medal and the Order of Australia.

In honour of the significant contribution that Professor Prince made to the University and to the field of Chemical Engineering, we are seeking funds to establish merit based undergraduate scholarship in Chemical Engineering to be known as the Rolf Prince Scholarship.
