Animal Welfare Outreach Program at HopeStreet

Caring for animals whose owners are doing it tough

Imagine experiencing homelessness and having a pet in need of veterinary care. Unfortunately, it’s a common situation, and it can be truly overwhelming for those are not able to afford care for their animal companion.

But thanks to the BaptistCare HopeStreet and the University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospital, every month a pop-up veterinary service operates in Sydney’s Woolloomooloo – offering free vet care to animals in need.

Helping man’s best friend

The clinic is staffed by volunteers including veterinarians, veterinary nurses and University of Sydney vet students who provide a range of treatments – including parasite control, vaccinations, desexing and heartworm testing. Sadly, they’ll often need to perform full surgeries back at the hospital if an animal is suffering.

However, a lot of these situations are all preventable with the most basic veterinary care.

The animals that visit the clinic are loved. They provide companionship and hope for their owners. And it is this type of veterinary care that these pet owners wish they could provide to their beloved animal companion, but unfortunately don’t have the means to do so.

You can help more animals get the treatment they need

The clinic runs solely on donations, good will and volunteer veterinary services. An average visit to the clinic can cost upwards of $175 in supplies for a single patient, and each month, around 20 animals visit the service. The expense means that our veterinarians are limited in what they can do to help. With your support, the pop-up clinic could treat even more beloved pets than it does now, and keep more tails wagging.
