Bushfire Emergency Veterinary Appeal

In response to the current bushfire emergency, the University is extending and increasing our current veterinary services for animals affected by the bushfire as a matter of urgent priority.

How are we helping? 

The University of Sydney is providing additional services and support for wildlife, companion animals and livestock affected by the bushfires.

Our veterinary staff are dedicated to providing assistance and support to the animals that need it most.

• We are able to house, feed and treat animals that have been displaced due to fire or loss of habitat.
• Our hospitals are taking additional wildlife referrals as a consequence of the bushfires.
• Our Avian Reptile and Exotic Pet Hospital in Camden is offering a 24/7 hotline to veterinarians and wildlife carers who need immediate advice.
• Our Koala Health Hub provides online koala care information to veterinarians and rehabilitation volunteers nationally.
• We provide free chlamydia testing kits for koalas to veterinarians and other agencies to limit the spread of this devastating koala disease for the koalas left behind.
• The University is committed to supporting other volunteer organisations and government agencies with the provision of veterinary support.
• Our staff are providing veterinary care to companion animals affected by the bushfires at no charge (or at subsidised cost).
• The University is conducting crucial research into health of koalas and other wildlife, working with state government to maximise the recovery of populations of threatened species and with rehabilitation groups to develop best-practice treatment and rehabilitation approaches.

Why do we need your support?

In response to the current bushfire emergency, our urgent priority is to extend and increase our current services for people who have a genuine need for veterinary care for animals affected by the bushfire.  Additional support from donors like you, will help us to do even more.

Due to the ongoing devastation caused by the catastrophic bushfires wreaking havoc upon Australia, vast populations of animals have been lost, injured and displaced. Professor Chris Dickman estimates that more than one billion animals have been affected since September 2019 (not including, insects, bats or frogs).
